Evening Landscape from the Control Room by CAMP
November 18, 2018
Category: Open Source
Date: 18th November, 2018
Venue: Rooftop, Alif Building, 34-A Chuim Village, Bandra (W).
Live event, begins at 6pm sharp with sunset.
From the rooftop of this artists' studio in Chuim Village, you are taken on a virtual tour of the neighborhood: its forgotten golf course and mango orchards, it's Ambedkarite settlements and coconut Agripadas, its 150-year history and the 1.5 seconds in which a spotted pigeon may show us its future.
For the past many years, CAMP has been working with CCTV equipment as a movie-making medium. Live video from standard CCTV PTZ cameras allows us to look around this location in great detail, and keep its memory in storage. The sun setting over Juhu beach is just the beginning of this evening's story. What follows is in the tradition of landscape cinema. Images from Chuim Village, both near and far form the bulk of the story. Three people speak over these video streams, adding historical or contemporary details. Occasionally, a newspaper article from 1991, or a map from 1905, or an excel sheet from 2018 also comes in. As your brains receive signals from both the immediate, visceral neighborhood as well as forgotten history and obscure databases, you may begin to appreciate the true extent to which digital infrastructures and physical space are intertwined, and what you or I could do with that fact.
CAMP is a collaborative studio set up by Shaina Anand, Ashok Sukumaran and Sanjay Bhangar in 2007. CAMP has been producing provocative new work in video and film, electronic media, and public art forms, sustaining long duration and sometimes large scale artistic work. From their home base in Chuim village, Mumbai they run the online archives https://Pad.ma and https://Indiancine.ma, and the Mankhurd community space, R and R among other activities including their long-running rooftop screening space.
